Another Blogger Quits His Job

John Gruber of Daring Fireball just quit his day job to blog fulltime. For a year or two now he has been taking donations and selling t-shirts in order to make some money from his Mac blog. Lately he hasn’t been posting very often, and he feels that he needs to blog fulltime and really lay it all on the line.

First let me say good luck to him. And second: wtf man? Sure blogging is interesting. Sure you can get your thoughts out into the world, or disseminate some information. But is it really that great? Are you creating something the world can’t live without? Probably not. Blogging is a means to an end; whether you are trying to alert people to something new you are working on or looking for a job.

To me blogging is something I do in bouts. I’ll get into a zone for a few weeks where I feel like posting, and then I’ll get tired of it for a few more weeks. But I used to use all my sites to publicize whatever new and interesting project I am working on. Now I just use this one to publicize updates, and to write about whatever else I feel like. Blogging will most likely never be a fulltime career for me, but it could be an extra source of income. Right now the only place I make some money is from my Apple blog. It will likely stay that way for a while to come.

A better use of this site has been posting information that TCNJ students may find useful and informative. Dispelling myths and dispensing valuable tidbits of knowledge. And with the contact form I setup, it’s a way of contacting an SGA Senator and getting your voice heard and your issues dealt with. Sure I self-promote a little here and there, but I try to keep my motives clear and not deceive. For some strange reason I truly want to help people. Go figure.
