Topix.net has announced that three newspapers are each taking a 25 percent stake in the site. Gannett Co., Knight-Ridder Inc., and Tribune Co. are participating in a new trend toward integration and consolidation. Gannett publishes USAToday.com, and they all invested in Careerbuilder.com among other sites. Topix works much like Google News by collecting news from multiple sources, but Topix organizes the news into topics such as “beach volleyball” and “high performance computing.”
