ShipGooder Pisses Me Off

in Web

Apparently ShipGooder.com was mentioned in an ABC News spot. It’s a site that lets you enter a starting and ending zip code for a package, along with its weight. And then you get rates from many shipping services so you can compare them. That’s all well and good, but gooder?? Really? Has correct grammar gone out the window? I’m sorry, but that is just wrong.

ShipGooder.com if you must, but I still don’t like the name.

GoDaddy and Comcast Having Troubles

in Web

I was going to post that many Comcast customers couldn’t access any GoDaddy-hosted sites, among other sites as well. Unfortunately I couldn’t access my site to post. And now I can. Still need to find news on what the issue was. I was able to get confirmation of the problem from this DSL Reports forum post.

Facebook Boombox App Taken Down by Developer

in Web

It appears that the Boombox application on Facebook has been removed by its developer. This was an application that let you select songs to display on your Facebook profile. They played in a small Flash area, loading mp3s found on the internet. I’m guessing it was a legal issue. I did noticed two days ago that the Flash part wasn’t loading and the application wasn’t working right.

This facebook listing for The Boombox app’s owner Adam Mosseri (link) now returns no results, showing that the person deleted their Facebook account. Very fishy.

I am now looking for a new application to load on my profile that does the same thing. Unfortunately I do not remember which songs I had listed.

Here are a few alternatives:

Gleemax Goes Live With Alpha

in Web

Gleemax has gone live. Gleemax is Wizards of the Coast’s new social gamer website. You can discuss any games and read up on the blogs of Wizards of the Coast developers. WotC is the creator of Magic the Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons, and a whole slew of other game properties. They have great plans for it, as they told me at this year’s Digital Life when I sat down with them. I was able to speak with their Director of Online Media and they seemed very committed to the social aspect of gaming and embracing user-generated content. I just wanted to let you know the site is live so you can check it out. I will write up more about it once I have a chance to check it out in earnest.

eBay Breaks Sell Your Item Form, I Fix It

in Web

eBay has introduced a bug into their Sell Your Item (SYI) seller listing form that stops the form from being accepted. They have been adding improvements (link) lately, and it looks like they didn’t test the latest changes before the weekend. I was able to find some discussion in the eBay forums that details a workaround until eBay can fix the problem (link).

The shipping section isn’t loading correctly if you try to use the default flat rate option. An easy way to get it to reload the section is to switch to one of the other shipping options in the dropdown menu before switching back to flat rate. Then you can fill out the shipping info and it will work.

I hope this helps some people out their in their eBay endeavors.

Amazon Redesigned

in Web

I just noticed that Amazon.com has been redesigned. They made it easier to find the shopping department you want with a left-side navigation menu that displays a submenu when you hover over a main category. And they made it so much easier to find someone’s wishlist. Also, when you are in a section you can see the other sections of the department and easily switch to them. It might actually make Amazon.com more usable for many people.

I know I have always had a difficult time in the Account section trying to find the right place for the information I needed (such as gift certificate balance or how to rate one of my recent purchases). Unfortunately the account section now focuses on highlighting purchases recommended for you, and the account options are crammed into a right-side navigation menu. So that still needs some work.

I like a simple and uncluttered design because I know how to handle a site. But the nice submenu display on each page that shows you others sections of the current department adds a lot of height to the top of the page and pushes content lower down (at least with my font display size set to 16pt). The design is being tested and you may or may not see it when you visit Amazon.

Below is an image they posted on their demo site explaining the site design features. What are your thoughts on the new design?

Online Coupons

in Web

So the other day I was planning on buying AppleWatch.net and the GoDaddy coupon I usually use to save me two dollars on a new domain wasn’t working. I started looking around for GoDaddy coupons and I came across DealTaker. Unfortunately it seemed every coupon I could find from anywhere online wouldn’t give me more than one dollar off a new domain, but I was impressed with the selection from DealTaker. And then I received an email about getting a free shirt for mentioning them. It’s odd how things work out randomly like that. I’ve also tinkered with other sites that spotlight specific deals when I was looking for some hard drives (Slickdeals, Dealigg, and FatWallet).

The Venice Project = Joost

in Web

The Venice Project has been renamed Joost. This is the video streaming service that the former Skype founders have been working on. I’ve been beta testing it for a few weeks and it works well. A lot better than something like Youtube which has been sluggish lately. The name change was prematurely posted online, but the Joost developers got the new site up and running for beta testers.

Do you have any questions about the program that you would like me to try to answer? Any screenshots you would like?

I also have two invitations that I may give out if you can prove yourself worthy. Tell me why you deserve an invite to this cool new project.

Zooomr and ADF

in Web

Zooomr is another photo sharing site, and by posting an uploaded picture I’m supposed to be able to get a free pro account. It has some nice features such as being able to save or embed varying sizes of any uploaded photo, and the pro account offers a lot more upload capacity (4GB/month) over Google’s Picasa Web Albums which I have been using lately. What I really like about Zooomr is the ability to click on a photo’s name and change it right there using AJAX. I love instantaneous results. You can also geotag your photos.

Now all I need is a scanner with ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) and I can finally get my trip photos from Spain and France online. That will let me scan a pile of photos automagically while I do other things that aren’t so labor intensive. The problem is that they are fairly expensive, in the $200-$300 range for a low-end scanner with ADF. It costs $100-$200 just to get a feeder that goes on top of an existing scanner, but the scanner I have was free after rebate and is therefore of poor quality. If you have any suggestions let me know.
