Y!Q: Contextual Search from Yahoo

in Search

Yahoo just introduced a new service/feature-set called Y!Q. It analyzes the context of a page you are viewing and then gives you search results related to it. It’s a bit spotty since it depends on what part of a page you tell Y!Q to use for the context when getting related results. You can see it being tested with Yahoo News, and you can find out how to add Y!Q to your own site and Firefox. Or you can just start searching Yahoo using the Y!Q technology.

It seems like a nifty idea, but the results can sometimes not be what you are looking for. Also, with the search it doesn’t always pick out the right contexts to use. Still, this is a definite step in the right direction and it almost made me switch from using Google for everything. Improve the contextual search and then combine it with A9’s features and you’d have a force to be reckoned with.

(InsideGoogle has a nice analysis of Y!Q)
