Are New Google Ads Doing Evil?
in Google
Google’s AdSense blog just posted news of a change in the look of AdSense ads. Gone is the “Ads by Google” bar at the top, replaced with a smaller mention in the bottom right of an ad unit. They write that “the new formats are not only visually appealing to users, but they also perform even better for publishers and advertisers.” This doesn’t mean they are better for ad viewers.
Is it any question whether an ad will perform better if it blends in with the page so well and only says it is an ad at the bottom in a small area? This smells like Google is being evil and sacrificing transparency in search of the almighty dollar. Of course the old format did look bad.
I think this highlights one of the philosophies of Internet advertising. Do users like it?
Google’s efforts here have made the ads more appealing to the eye. They have also made better use of the Google brand by bringing the well-known Google font to the ad unit.
To me, the user is going to know either way whether or not the box is an ad box or not, it’s just a question of making the experience better. This does it, in my view.
i run google adsense on my blog http://seanprice.net/blog and i much prefer the new design, i have also noted recently that i am geting the video ads through a lot more often. Granted the video is still the same Google Maps trailer video but wasnt long ago that i would have never got a video ad, and now they are becoming more frequent.
Evil is harsh.
l also just read from the adsense official blog of google about this article and l saw they gave u a backlink of your article and its should be very friendly for you:)
l am also adsense publisher and like all adsense publishers myself also liked the news changes of best pay per click broadcaster of google adsense’s new advertisement blocks.
They are working hard to understand what the advertisers want and how to make them happy with the publishers clicks, from my point of wiew, adsense advertising unit workers also realised that the old wiew of google adsense was becoming unfriendly to the publishers and they become a very apart side of the website they are published. Google is changing this, they are tring to design new templates for their advertisers to let visitors of the adsense publishers pages more good looking and friendly to let them “click” on the advertisement.
l think adsense advertisers also want this new format. They were also realising they advertisers become very unfamilier with the site. They were also looking for the best position to their ads for maximum response. l think google will giwe more friendly looks to their advertisers to let the visitors “click” on the advertisements…
Advertisers happy, Publishers happy. Google happy.
[...] It appears (based on my own ads) that if your ads do not have a border, then the slightly skewed area over the “Ads by Google” logo does not appear, either. Jason wonder if this is sort of evil, since it sacrifices transparency in the name of higher ad click rates. I wonder if there actually are higher ad click rates. [...]
