Singing Fish Is No More, Kind Of
A reader in the comments notes that Singing Fish is gone. This indeed appears to be the case when looking at the domain. SingingFish.com is now being redirected to video.aol.com. This is a loss of a great site that I only recently started using, but you can still get some audio results in AOL Audio Search. You no longer get the ability to tweak the results to the file formats you are looking for, and they no longer display the bitrates of the files. Also, in many cases the results are for files you must buy. SingingFish.com returned links to freely available audio and video files, however legal they may have been.
There no longer seems to be anything on the current AOL site with the complete features of SingingFish. A lot of what they now display is for paid content, especially on AOL Video, and SingingFish didn’t really lend itself to being monetized. The redirection of SingingFish.com to video.aol.com leaves many people not knowing about AOL’s Audio Search. In reading some web buzz some people who used SingingFish didn’t even know it was owned by AOL and they think AOL just bought them. AOL has owned them since 2003. It had a good run, and it will be sorely missed.
Update: FLX in the comments writes that AOL has only redirected the main page of SingingFish and not the sub-directories. I could have sworn I tested this but I guess I didn’t, or I didn’t test the right thing. You can still access SingingFish for the time-being at http://singingfish.com/sfw/home.jsp.
Update 2: They appear to be redirecting the workaround. This may signal the definitive end for SingingFish, unless someone finds another method that works.

thx for the post. was wondering what happened as i used it last night.
sucks big time. the least AOL could have done was post a closure date. corporate fools. total disregard for users.
RIP singingfish. you’ll be missed.
Why if Singingfish was owned by AOL would they now disregard the dedicated users of such a great site to a very poor equivalent?
As I hope that there maybe a return
RIP……..( I’m now in solemn prayer )…….
I believe the point is that it didn’t make money for AOL. They originally wanted the technology, but most likely to make money from it. Once they have the technology they can force people to use something that makes them money.
If you are still trying to get to your reliable singingfish.com use the link
http://singingfish.com/sfw/home.jsp
Aol has only redirected the singingfish.com homepage and none of the subdirectories, at least not yet
Just wanted this to get out to fellow singingfish.com users
FOU FREEKING ROCK! THANK YOU SO F’ING MUCH FLX!
well its been really sad to know what AOL did to singingfish…and the worse part is we cant do anything about it..as u can see AOL owns singingfish which i dont know until i spotted this article about the issue..so just wanna say thanks to the people who put the link in there…it helps allot…so..pls AOL put back the singingfish..i promise to feed the fish 3 times a day..lol
[...] Secondly, AOL managed to screw up. They only redirected the front page for the first couple of days, so users were able to access SingingFish through the numerical IP or through this address: http://singingfish.com/sfw/home.jsp, as reported on Jason Blogs. This has probably given some hope to the users, but then in a couple of days AOL killed off that, too. Would you like some salt with your wound, Sir? [...]
does anyone know another site which is like singing fish?
Why! Why! That was such a good site for audio/video searching and now its gone..I never thought I’d see the day when a good site like that would suddenly close out of the blue..Just a few weeks ago I was on it..Never ever thinking it would close..Those AOL b*tches got there damn nerve if they are the ones RESONSIBLE FOR THIS… :-[
its very saddening about singingfish, it was so easy to use and reliable. but if you need another site to use, try going to http://www.dogpile.com and click audio search. or another site is http://www.projectplaylist.com/musicsearch?searchfor=
hope those work for everyone
N E W S F L A S H ! Singingfish is back in AOL Beta form, but better than before. It includes bitrates, length etc. just as it always did and there are far more references. As yet, I haven’t found any site that uses Singing Fish that is aware that the beta exists, so I would appear to be amongst the first to know. The exact beta URL is at the moment http://search.aol.co.uk/audio . Once there, if you click on the word Beta, you can let them know what you think. I’m delighted. It’s like having an old friend back. Oh - and if you watch very carefully, you’ll sometimes see the word singingfish in places, almost immediately changing to something else, but proving that it is the Singing Fish database.
Thanks for that Steve, maybe all is not lost after all. Maybe i have missed it but i couldnt see any results for Quick Time in the searches i just made so maybe i will email the buggers and tell em. With regard to Audio and Video searches i think they need to give the choice of Either, or, or both as the current interface is not as clear as the Fish was. I guess only time will tell. Perhaps our yelling and complaints have begun to pay off. Thanks again for alerting me to it Steve. Happy searching to you.
I’m usually not a blog reader, but I was looking for explainations about SingingFish and happened upon your site. Thanks for the info and good posts by your readers. I’ll try to make your blog a regular stop……
Keep up the good work,

Richy, see my post here with alternatives.

SINGING FISH WILL BE AVENEGED!
Kirsteee, your just upset because you can’t steal music anymore. In actuallity, we should applaud AOL for preventing theft like this.
Franz Ferdinand, don’t even start with stealing music crap. This is how I personally find music I like and show friends good songs, and I buy a ton of cds/lps because of this tool.
Well said, Greg. Amazon’s 30 second clips aren’t enough to tell you whether you like a song or not.
From all the moaning above, I can only assume that people haven’t read my earlier message. Singing Fish is back and better than before, under the name of AOL, but only the English site. The American one is no good. http://search.aol.co.uk/audio
How does that English site work? I don’t understand how to use it
hewww… i really miss singingfish… ToT
is there really no come back now?????????????????????
I HATE AOL!!!
I loved singing fish… why is it gone??
Wow, that just totally screws over almost all of the Songbird project. It used Singingfish as it’s default search. Without this functionality, I might as well go back to Amarok.

This is a great blog site. Oh and…quit your sniffling Franz Ferdinand. If you want to talk about theft you should look at all the money the music monster market is making off of over rated and over priced cd’s; and thensome. Screw AOL taking over Singing Fish and our (basic) right to enjoy music, and heavenforbid to enjoy it for FREE!! Further more, isn’t the fundamental idea of music to make people feel good? Why should we have to pay for THAT!?! I mean, didn’t you get into music because it was something you loved? Something you enjoyed? Something that gave you release from the stresses of the world and made you feel better? Why is there so much energy expended on being sure to nickel and dime everyone in everyway (and anyway) to these basic human rights and needs? Seems pretty rediculous to me; like making a mountain out of a mole hill. So, don’t come to us with all your hypocritical b.s. More sights like Singing Fish should be supported. As greg said, this is a great resource to you in getting your music heard by countless scores of people. Lastly, stop wasting your time and energy trifling and spend more on what’s most important. (To get an idea of what’s most important, try to remember why you started in music in the first place and put yourself back there with those thoughts, feelings, and true and commendable motivation.) Count your blessings and be appreciative!!
That’s just my comment from the peanut gallery. -Rant end.- (Peace!) >=P
Singingfish had become more dependable than any p2p program available- what a pain in the ass that AOL has bought it out. I can’t believe that it has been months and they haven’t done shit to try and re-build any sort of audio search website, I mean, shit, what was the point of even buying singingfish.com? Of course, that’s aol for you, if they ARE trying to replace singingfish with another audio search, of course they’re going to take their sweet ass time doing it. Too busy mailing out motherfucking AOL trial discs I guess.
RIP singingfish.
Hi - you might want to check out skreemr.com - its a little different than singingfish, but there’s lots of stuff indexed and it works well with songbird.
oh when i went away for doing my first chrim. Zaid Bethanie.
Singing fish was the best their was, now GOL (Gay O nline) bought it out. F U AOL (GOL). AOL is owned by Crack Heads.
Yeah, singingfish.com was awesome. Too bad AOL killed it. There is this new site http://sadsteve.com though, that works in much the same way. And, in my opinion, downloads are easier. Check it out.
Let music live on!
Those AOL b*tches got there damn nerve if they are the ones in gilt..
