Singing Fish is Amazing: Finds MP3s
Singing Fish is a company that AOL bought in 2003. The service lets you search for audio and video online. You can even specify what type of media to search, such as only mp3s. I never tried the site before now, but thanks to a comment on Nathan’s site I plan to use it as much as possible.
It’s great for finding those obscure songs, like the Royksopp song in the Geico commercial I posted about a few days ago. And of course it can find popular music. I was surprised to find a lot of Metallica songs given their track record of helping to shut down Napster.
Update: I thought SingingFish was gone, but FLX in the comments writes that AOL has only redirected the main page of SingingFish and not the sub-directories. You can still access SingingFish for the time-being at http://singingfish.com/sfw/home.jsp. Hopefully it stays up a while, but I will be on the lookout for an alternative to push on this site.
Update 2: They appear to be redirecting the workaround. This may signal the definitive end for SingingFish, unless someone finds another method that works. There are also some interesting posts in the comments that offer up alternatives.
Update 3: I have searched for alternatives to SingingFish and you can find the evolving list here.

what happened to it? its gone now i think
[...] A reader in the comment notes that Singing Fish is gone. This indeed appears to be the case. SingingFish.com is now being redirected to video.aol.com. This is a loss of a great site that I only recently started using, and it begs the question why AOL even bought it to begin with. [...]
You appear to be correct, Lacy. It looks like AOL has finally killed off SingingFish.com.
This is terrible news indeed! That site I used for years was the only place for me to find many rare records and it’s now gone thanks to AOL. How can a resource with so many fans be killed so easy? Damn AOL, never liked em :E
Terrible. I’m in shock. Espew isn’t too bad, still, it won’t compair to good old Singingfish. What a shame.
I DONT BELIEVE AOL, I WANT SINGING FISH BAC,IT WAS EASY TO USE NOW IM LOST,BUT I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT I WILL NOT BE USING AOL! DOUBLE DAMN YOU!!! WOT A F*****G LIBERTY!!!
BRING SINGINGFISH BAC NOW!!!
i don’t understand! i will never ever ever use AOL..not that i do anyway. i love singingfish! is there anyway at all that it will come back? and why have AOL redirected it?
what a shame…it never let me down.
I thnk it is absolutly crazy!!!! AOL have ruined the best search sight!!!!
A terrible loss!!!
Singingfish is not dead…only the singingfish.com url. If you are still trying to get to singingfish.com try using a subdirectory page:
http://singingfish.com/sfw/home.jsp
It works for now, but for how much longer I don’t know. A great alternative is webjay.com if you are looking for another mp3 site
yup im pissed too, but does anybody know of any websites to use now.. i mean i used singingfish for all my music and now its gone
FLX, thank you!!
Hmmmm Thanks Ann though I’m still mad about AOL buying them off, it’s a real good source to find and download rare music. T_T
AOL can you suck so much more.
I’m also going to check out webjay
AOL is the most annoying ass company ever and I can’t believe they acquired Singingfish. AOL has the most corny site ever. PISSED!
FLX
Well spotted FLX you have returned a little joy to a sad NET. I cannot thank you enough and will circulate the updated URL. True enough though, how much longer that will be there is the main question. Webjay is an OK site for sure but only the Singing Fish can actually find real rarieties, oldies, streams, podcasts and obscure sites. Surely there must be some way to save it, after all it was getting several million hits per day and i am sure that the truly dreadful AOL Video site hits can be counted on one hand in comparision to that.
How long it will stay up is anyone’s guess. It’s a simple site that just works. But it’s hard to make money off of it from a business standpoint.
It’s also nice to see a lot of conversations going on here.
you can link your website to Singing Fish for a small fee and in some cases free i seem to remember and if your selling music it has to be mutually useful. I even found some interesting things on AOL video via the Fish but as usual the majority of them didnt work properly or not a all. Perhaps if AOL concentrated on making its own software work properly and stopped messing with things that aee Ok we could all be happier. AOL, if it aint broke, dont fix it.
Thanks for the opportunity to speak out Jason.
singingfish.com
AOL is the biggest joke in the world and i wish they would stop messing things up and get out of the UK, they are not welcome here anymore and never was because they don’t pay our taxes and they screw everything up.
Get lost AOL and thanks for stuffing up SINGINGFISH
Well FLX, it looks like they got round to that link you gave too so Singing Fish really is no more now unless theres another back door somewhere. AOL Vid really is a pile of commercial crap, new and obscure bands have to start somewhere and Singing Fish was a lifeline to them. AOL is now only a name in the UK though, As of last year they sold out AOL UK to Carphone Whorehouse and its them who now have the rights. LIke many i will be switching from AOL ASAP because the whorehouse is total pants and AOL is now only a name. I suggest we get everyone to bombard AOL with hate mail, whilst we still have the chance. Anyway, good luck friends and if i find any other good search engines you can be sure i will come back here and let you know soonest.
webjay.org, dogpile.com,archive.org
i am so frusterated.
FLX thanks for the help… at least it worked for a while… but now it doesnt… is there any other way to get to singingfish? or is it really dead:( if anyone knows of another way please let me know!
thanks
I have just tried the AOL audio search (ie the tab next to video) and done my usual singingfish search and the same results came back. You can still right click to download as before. The only difference is you don’t know what the file type is until you rigth click.
It’s not the fish but it is not as bad as musichunter.com..I hate supporting corporate idiots, but I hate paying for mp3’s more…
Man am too pissed at this!! i depended such a lot on singingfish!!get lost AOL!
Sorry to interrupt you guys, same as all of you, i feel dreadly disappointed about the lost of singingfish. Is it will lost forever, or temporarily?? Hope anyone can inform me about this…
I’ve been using multiply.com. just sign-up and then go to search on the navigation bar and click on music. easier to use than webjay or the other ones.
what happpened to singing fish!!!????thats the only website Im using to find music url!!!!!and now its gone!!!!OMG!!!come back!
GUYYYYSSSSS…… learn about the internet a little bit.
So they rerouted the dns to video.aol. but is the actual Singingfish page still out there or did they shut down the server. Cause if the server is still out there just not attached to the DNS http://www.singingfish.com … and someone was to know the IP address of the server singingfish was run off of…. we could still use singingfish just by typing in the IP Address.
the server is obviously up because aol search is pulling stuff from it. so search blogs along with me and try to find out if anyone knows the IP address to singingfish.
IF ONLY I WOULDA TRACKED SINGINGFISH WHILE IT WAS STILL UP!?!?#!$#%#!@
I’m thinking they would have taken it down for good. I’m not sure if there’s any way around it.
This is a terrible loss is Singingfish- how could AOL do such a thing to what was the best Audio/video search engine on the net. It beats Dogpile anyday.
im so upset singinfish is gone! i always used to get great music[that they never have on itunes] from grey’s anatomy! & i just got a new ipod video, and i was going to go on singingfish to download some movies, or tv shows. but now i cant.
it was perfect for audio & video everything. does anyone know another site like that, that esp. has videos?!?!?
The Loss of Singingfish has angered me a lot. I can’t find a replacement search engine (Well, I found Espew), which gave me what I wanted, but unfortunately, something was wrong with Windows Media Player- I got some peculiar error that was of no use to me at all. I gave up in the end and decided to ask ASk for a new one, but I know Yahoo has one, but you have to pay in American dollars with a Credit Card, and I’m not 18!
I demand that AOL gives up Singingfish pretty quick! I have tried contacting them, but I get an “Error on Page” message appear on my bottom toolbar. This is a disgusting move, AOL are a pile of junk!!!
Hi, I always use the Singingfish, even in school. I was wondering does anyone know any other SAFE downloading sites or MP3’s which are free? We have to accept that it has gone and never coming back, thanks.
one website solves it all…. IMEEM.COM
its safe for work school and home and has everything singingfish had and more it even has foreign music such as Jpop artist Ai otsuka!
well enjoy ^_^
wow thank you very much, i will be giving that a try! Thanks again!
hey with the imeem.com website, how do you transfer the song into an mp3 that can be played from itunes? there is this link that says “download this song: itunes”… and i clicked it… but it didnt work…
can anyone help me here? that would be much appreciated!
thanks
Does anyone know any good, safe legal free downloading sites that are easy to use? Thanks
‘Tis true. Singingfish is really gone and won’t be back. The last of the employees were laid off in December ‘06 (see the scoop on trenchmice.com — http://www.trenchmice.com/scoop/2/) and it seems that AOL finally cut the cord this month.
As a former employee at Singingfish, let me tell you all that I really get a kick reading about how much people enjoyed the site.
Thanks,
Austin
i know its really bad and sad loosing something precious like a free mp3 site, but can we move on and lets share out what else sites there is in net that we can download mp3s from for free…
Yes, it has gone forever but I have tried
dogpile.com
and it is just as good.
Why don’t you give it a go?
I will create a new post soon that will have some alternatives to SingingFish, and I will update that list as people submit comments with other sites. The post should be up in a few days.
[...] With the recent demise of SingingFish, many people have been commenting on what other sites are out there for them to find music. A former employee of SingingFish even commented briefly on the situation. [...]
singing fish was just so easy.you just typed in a song then you could download it! were else can you do that?
Everywere else you have to download it all. URGH!!!
BRING IT BACK NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, the dogpile site was rubbish in the end, well that is saying it nice! The searches are rubbish! Does anyone know anywhere where you can save music, put it in your files then transfur it to your phone? The singing fish used to do that! Can anyone please help me?
http://www.espew.com/ is just as good as singingfish.com
This is so depressing it’s not even funny.
I used Singingfish so freakin’ much.
I have AOL, But I hate it so mucch..!!
So is there anyother sites now?
I’m so lost.
what the hell happened to singing fish tht site was awsome i cant believe its gone im so upset!!!
I agree…singingfish was the best media place ever. =)
You just have to accept that it is gone, and never coming back, just leave AOL to carry on with their childish games!
Here here, this sucks ass. Thank God I don’t rely on AOL for anything else. It was good to finally find some explanantion of what happened to the beloved fish. I was without internet, then came back…and behold…The dearest was gone. I think I may cry. *sigh* Espew here we come…
coolb
Is espew safe to put things onto your MP3 ?
Is it safe and legal?
And dogpile, is that safe to save the music to transfur to your mp3?
Can anyone help me?
Go America! =P
A answer to all of your questions is:
metacrawler.com
********AOL Search UK - Audio - AOL Search UK was sold by AOL, and therefore their Audio Search is using the SingingFish technology with fish all its benefits. it is by far the nearest I have found to the sand I am happy with it. Try it, get in…Thanks *********
i tried espew and the songs just vansih off itunes when imported into the library. any1 no of a website wer i cn get the files to import like singing fish?
Try both http://musicat.espew.com & http://espew.com
Personally, I think that http://musicat.espew.com is better than Singingfish. You can save searches, create playlists, share music, etc., for free.
it works at finding mp3’s but you can’t just download it on your computer like you could on singing fish.com so its worthless. But thanks anyways its ALmost as good.
Search projectplaylist on google, its even better than singingfish and allows you to create playlists that you can put on your myspace, and download them
Hey!
your alternative list to singingfish has gone!
can you please tell us the links, some of them were really awesome including this directory one…, i found loads there!
would really apreciate it,
keep up the good work
The list is still here. I changed around the url format of the site, but redirected the old links to the new ones. It’s here
Hey! I clicked on thee link, it still says 404 page cannot be found… its in the style of your blog if that means something!
If its just my computer, i would appreciate some of the links posted in a comment or something - its a great list. Thanks so much, oh and it probably is my comp or something.
Wow. I can’t believe it. The post was accidentally set to private. So only I was able to see it, and I couldn’t tell that no one else could access it. That is very disappointing, but thanks so much for telling me of the problem. It should work now.
Just wanted to let you know about Grabb.it MP3 Search, an online mp3 search tool that also lets you make and share playlists in the style of Webjay.
Anyone know where I can download music & theme tunes for free without having to get QuickTime 7 pro?
Hi all!
Very interesting information! Thanks!
G’night
There is a new singing-fish style website out there that allows for full length previews and easy downloads. Good library too. Unlike singingfish, which streamed the files in a media player, this site has its own player so that is handy. Enjoy.

Singingfish was the best media place ever. Now many clones of it and sites even better !
